In 1998 during a Monday night chat at the Chogokin Cafe, Roger
Harkavy began discussing the possibility of a few of us getting
together for a Chogokin summit. The idea gained a great deal of
support from everyone so it was decided that we should do it.
Roger was the man behind the first Summit. It was held at his house
and he made sure that everyone agreed on when it would be, how we
would all get there, and what we would be doing.
When I arrived at around two in the afternoon, I finally got to meet
people I had talked to in email, but never met in person. Roger
answered the door and was really friendly. He introduced me to the
multi-lingual Matt Alt, and two other collectors named Marc and Alex,
whom I'd also never met before. After introductions, Roger took us
all up-stairs to see his cool collection of robots. He's into Votoms,
Dorvak and of course HCMs. Its great seeing collections of toys which
are different in their focus from mine because I get to see toys I've
never even heard of.
After that we just went down stairs to talk and trade. It was so cool
to just kick it back and rap about robot toys for a few hours. I
think all of us made at least one or two trades. To top it off, Roger
gave us each a small Votoms scopedog as a "summit exclusive"!
That evening some of us made it to The Outer Limits store, to see if
they had anything good on their shelves. Alex, roger and I met up
with one of the owners, Steve, so we all talked a while about Japan
and collecting. All in all in was a great experience and I'm sure
that there will be many more Chogokin Summits. |
