Cool Toy of the Month

The cool toy for April is the Votoms Red Shoulder re-issue. It is so cool that all these great toys are being reissued. The new Scopedog/ATM-09-RSC is totally faithful to the original release except for the box and some slight color changes.

Collecting, what is the deal with this hobby?

Wow an ultra rare piece of crap knockoff from taiwan!

Holy smokes! A super rare, hard to find inbred bastardization of Mazinga and Gardian for only $42!!!

I've decided to write a sort of editorial this week. Many people have been talking about how collecting once was in the good old days. "Back in the 80's I would go to blah-blah shop and I'd get a bushel of chogokin for $10!" I can see their point. Prices have risen, but what do you expect. I've always believed in supply and demand. If people want to pay $1000 for a metal robot that is 4" tall, let them.

But last night I was on the net and decided to go to e-bay and see what was for sale. I typed in Godaikin and of course a bunch of shogun/popy/godaikin/japanese/robot listings appeared. I started going down the row, looking at the toys and prices, and then suddenley something hit me. What the fuck is going on here! There was some person selling the trendmaster Voltron set as a rare shogun/godaikin blah blah blah.

This toy is $30 in any Toys R Us, and some poor sap is going to pay $50+ for it. Then I looked at the list again and I realized what was bugging me. There were all the toys I had sought for so many years. The toys that I had looked for in garage sales, swap meets, comic book shows and weird antique stores in Manhattan. There they all were, for the right price. No more searching, forget about the hunt. If you've got enough cash, you've got the toy.

It made me think of something Tom Francks said on his page or somewhere. He said that even Bill Gates, with all his money, couldn't get all these japanese toys (or something to that effect). Well I guess now that's all bullshit. Collecting isn't about finding a piece on a table in the back of a Toy show. Now its about taking out a loan from a bank and sniping an auction at the last minute with your cable modem. Not that I'm some kind of saint. I've gotten stuff from e-bay and for certain pieces I was watching till the last second. Maybe I'll just link my collectors tales section to e-bay's bid history section.

I guess it's just made me sad (or mad?). Like those other collectors, I miss the hunt. And it seems like many of these new collectors don't care about that, and thats sad because collecting is about collecting...it's not about buying.

Got the Camera!

I finally got my Nikon Coolpix 950! My lack of a decent digital camera (I was using a Kodak DC20) has been my excuse for not filling in the Godaikin and Super Robots section of my site. Well now I have the tools. This camera is amazing, taking pic 1600X1200 pixels in resolution! Here are some sample pictures I've taken with it. As soon as I get all the features figured out I'll start snapping pictures. Note: These pictures are big 700-800k. I bet you've never seen your SOC in this much detail!

The Sock of Gangsta Chogokin

Finally the story can be told. The tale of a boy and his sock.....and a gangsta and a HCM L-Gaim. Roger Harkavy has finally put down in words his amazing story of how he got a great toy and an even greater sock. Its amazing to think of where our toys come from.

Syd Mead Gundam

Lots of people have been talking about the new "Turn A Gundam" designed by Syd Mead and how it looks compared to the older gundams. Recently I got some Syd Mead books and was suprised to find some older (1995) drawings of Gundam for Bandai. I added them to the Gallery. You can see the "Mead" style in this, the new gundam, and the other, older images.

Update to Shogun Section

As I impatiently wait for my SOC Combattra to arrive, I can't help but feed my combattra mania. So I picked up this U-Combine Vehicle on Ebay without getting screwed too badly. I've added a couple of the images to the U-Combine section of the Shogun area.

Wave Catalog Added

I picked up a 1997 catalog from Wave company, manufacturers of some very nice models. Some of the lines they produce include Five Star Story and Votoms. No Die-Cast so it may not be appropriate for the site, but its a cool catalog. Anyway, who wouldn't want to buy a model kit from this pretty lady?

Updates?

Sorry I've been so lame about updating the site. Its just that I get busy and forget about the page or don't have much free time to work on it. I will try to at least update once a month with a few news things. Once I get my new digi-cam(come on Nikon!) I hope to pup some time aside and document the robots more thoroughly. Thanks for being patient. -Ted-

LED Mirage

I've always loved the look of the Five Star Story and have the one anime with the same title. This weekend I got the 1/144 Kaiyodo Led Mirage and it is awesome. You have to rip open the bubble container to get at it but I'm not a big NRFB fan anyway. If you like FSS then pic this puppy up! pic1 pic2 pic3 (Note the comparison to a spawn figure. Also look for the original sketch on my wall by Donato Giancola!)

I-Con 18

A beautiful painting by Tom Kidd

This weekend I went to I-Con 18. This is a really cool sci-fi convention out on long island. Way out on long island. There was some anime stuff, two beat up shoguns and some great artists. Donato Giancola, Tom Kidd, and others gave an awesome seminar! I'll have more on this when my pics come back.
